Resolved Question: type of bullet trap for test firing, seen them before, but cant find them anywhere now?
4th November 2009
can some one point me in the right direction. im looking for a bullet trap that is basically a box that you fire into at point blank range. ive seen them before but cant remember where or what they are called. basically the point of them, is for test firing for gunsmiths. that way, you can make your changes and repairs, walk over to the steel box in your basement, test the firing and feeding of what you did then, go back and do more work if need be. it would be nice if i could take my parts off the mill or lathe, put the gun together and test fire it right there, without having to drive an hour to my “local Range,” test it, then go home and make my adjustments. sometimes i would have to do this 3 or 4 times when really fine tuning some feed ramps or sticky hammer sears. what takes me 3 days to do could be done in an afternoon if i had one of those boxes. whats nice too about those boxes though is that you fire the gun your testing with muzzle just within the box in a foam rubber type of thing and its no louder than a cap gun. i saw a video of a man using the box with a 30-06 (frangible compressed copper dust bullets) into the box and didnt even have ear protection, right there in his garage. any information you guys can throw at me would be greatly appreciated. and yes, i know all the things about 300 feet from dwellings and whatnot in my town. ive spoken to the police and they say theres nothing wrong with firing a gun anywhere on your property as long as your 300ft away from dwellings and 500 from highways, and could care less about noise complaints if im doing it within reasonable hours of the day, so please no b.s. about how illegal or dangerous shooting in your basement is, because its neither, given the proper safety measures.
ya, i have several plans and ideas to build my own, and would definitely not want any kind of blame or liability on anyone else. the thing is, there is a company that specifically makes what i am looking for, but i just cant find them again. if i could, i can see the cost and determine whether i should invest the time and money to just build one, or if its easier and not much more expensive to just buy one.
snail traps!!! haha thats it, thank you. if i was a high enough level id give you a thumbs up. i appreciate it
