Open Question: Help! What should I do about fake attack claim?

    11th November 2009

Ok, so, a few doors down from my house is a Rottweiler named Max. I’ve known Max for years, ever since I was a young kid, and he’s the sweetest dog ever. Everyday after school when I was younger, he’d be waiting by the fence to greet me, he loves playing with kids, is good with elderly (his owners are an elderly couple) and he lives with two cats. In all the years I’ve known him, he’s never shown any sign of aggression, he’s very sweet and the only danger you’d be in from him is being hugged/licked to death. He’s also rather old now, I doubt he’s got more than two years left in him. This past week and a half I’ve been pet sitting him and the cats while his owners are on holiday and it’s all been fine with no trouble, but then two days ago, I was out in the front garden with him, we were playing with his ball, when a lady walking by stopped by the gate, and she started talking to me about Max. At first I thought she just liked the breed, as she was asking all about him (his temperament, was his good with kids, etc). I was speaking with her for a few minutes (couldn’t have been longer than three) and Max also came over to investigate. Suddenly, she just started shouting that Max had bitten her on her hand. However, Max was right next to me with a steel gate and about two feet between him and the women, he never even touched her. I was rather bewildered at first, and so I didn’t react, but she wouldn’t stop shouting that she’d been attacked by Max. After a few moments, I said to her that Max didn’t touch her, but she wouldn’t listen and insisted that she’d been bitten. Not sure what to do, I just told her to leave and brought Max inside the house. She stayed out there for about another minute before leaving. I thought that was that, she was an idiot I’d best forget about, but then today, the police stopped by saying a woman reported being attacked by Max. Max has been taken to a shelter for the time being, and the police called his owners, who’ve cut their holiday short and are flying home now. Despite the fact that this woman has no injuries (unless she’s harmed herself to make it look like Max did it), the police seem to believe her story, and I bet it’s just because Max is a Rottweiler. The problem is, although she can’t prove Max hurt her, I also have no proof that he didn’t. And I’m just afraid not many people are going to take a Rottweiler’s side. Max is a wonderful dog, and old, and it’s just not fair that this is happening to him. Does anyone know anyways of how I can help him? Get people to see that this woman is lying? Thanks for any advice.
